Public Genomic Literacy: Current Status and Paths to Improvement

Description

As genetic testing becomes increasingly accessible to the general public, the need for foundational genomic literacy has never been greater. Yet significant gaps remain between the pace of scientific advancement and public understanding of genetic concepts, testing options, and the implications of results. Drawing on lessons learned from sponsored genetic testing programs and partnerships with patient advocacy organizations, this webinar will explore the current landscape of genomic literacy and discuss practical strategies for improving understanding across the communities most impacted by these technologies.

Level of Instruction
Intermediate - Refresher course; some basic knowledge of subject recommended

Learning Objectives

1. Identify key barriers to public understanding of genetic testing, including gaps in foundational genomic concepts and the interpretation of results.
2. Apply principles from successful rare disease genetic testing and data sharing programs to communication strategies for diverse audiences.
